Native Wildflower and Fescue Grasslands Restoration Project

Beginning in Fall 2026

The Society is working with the City on a pilot project to plant wildflowers and native fescue grass in various parts of the park that would benefit from ecological restoration. The first test plot will be at the far east end of the park, in an on leash natural area that has been taken over by invasive grasses just below Sovereign Crescent.

We have City permission to collect a limited amount of wildflower seeds from an on-leash nearby natural area, close enough to Edworthy Park to be genetically almost the same, so we hope to use those seeds to grow seedlings for the 2027 or 2028 planting season. We are also planning a planting session for fall 2026 with native wildflowers purchased from a local nursery. We hope to raise enough money to purchase those plugs and also so that we can pay for wildflower plugs grown from the seeds collected. Each wildflower plug will cost about $5, so donations of $15 will pay for three plants.

This is the first time we have solicited donations from the public, subscribers to our mailing list, and our members. We do not usually need to do so but for this project, we need to ask for your volunteer and donation support. Tax receipts will be issued for donations of $15 or more. Our preferred method of donation is by Interac e-transfer at eparkhs@gmail.com with the name, address, and email address of the donor on the comments on the transfer. But of course we'll gladly accept other forms of donation, too -- please be in touch if you would like to donate. We eventually hope to raise $10,000 to cover all phases of this project.

If for any unforeseen reason the native plant plugs cannot be planted this fall, donations will be used for planting in 2027 or for future projects of the Society.
