Historic Calgary Week 2026 🏇🚂🦬 "The Dawsons Come West: Icons and Inspirations"
To celebrate Historic Calgary Week, the Edworthy Park Heritage Society invites you to read its new online article, “The Dawsons Come West: Icons and Inspirations." We follow George Mercer Dawson on his trip west with the British North America Boundary Commission, 1873-74, and his visits to Calgary in 1881 and Shaganappi Point in 1883. In 1898, he visited Tom Edworthy at his main quarry. His father, McGill University's principal and noted geologist, Sir William Dawson, also visited Shaganappi Point in 1883.
Drawing on new archival research and letters, we describe the travels of Dawsons at a critical time in Canadian scientific and colonial history, discussing their observations and study of the natural, geological, and cultural history of western Canada, including Calgary and Shaganappi Point.
